Master Rilion Gracie

Founder of Rilion Gracie Academy - Master rank of Coral Belt

Rilion Gracie is the youngest male son of the Grand Master Carlos Gracie Sr. (the founder of Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the creator of MMA ). He has been involved in his father's tradition since he was born. He has grown up in the world of mats, healthy living, improved life skills and philosophic concepts of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Rilion is proud to have had his father Carlos Sr. and his brother Rolls (the forefather of modern Jiu Jitsu) as his mentors and professors.

Before Jiu Jitsu became a sport, it was a martial art based on the principals of respect, hierarchy, discipline, self-control, self-confidence, patience and many others. The objective is rendering the opponent into submission.
Rilion fought competitively for 15 years in both Jiu Jitsu and free style matches. In his competitive career as a Black Belt he was never submitted, neither in competition nor in sparring sessions.
He is recognized in the Jiu Jitsu world for his mastery of the art and has become known for being "100% technical".
In the early 1990's, Rilion decided to move to Santa Catarina (a state in south Brazil) to spread his family's legacy, and establishing the Rilion Gracie Academy in Florianopolis. Through his dedication and expertise, his academy grew into what today is one of the strongest Jiu jitsu academies of South Brazil.
In the early 1980's besides teaching at the Gracie Ipanema academy, he was a founding member of the Gracie JJ School in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, along with his older brothers Crolin and Carlos Jr. In 1988, he was one of the instructors at the first Gracie Jiu Jitsu Seminar in the United States hosted by the actor and Martial Arts enthusiast Chuck Norris.
Rilion has been acclaimed by the most prestigious newspaper in Brazil (Jornal do Brasil) as the "...most techinical Jiu Jitsu Master in the world..."
Rilion has over 25 years teaching both Jiu Jitsu and MMA, and has been a professor and coach to many international champions including among them many representatives of the Gracie family, like Renzo, Ralf, Kyra, Rolles, Igor, Gregor, Daniel, Roger and his son Roggan (that did his victorious MMA debut in Milan Italy - May 2013, becoming the first Gracie to fight MMA in Europe). Rilion believes that the most important thing in life is the search for true essence, spiritual development to overcome life's difficulties and to contribute to a better world for all of us.
There is a no doubt that Jiu-Jitsu when practiced and taught with it's true principles, bring about physical, mental and spiritual benefits.

Rose Rosa

Black Belt- Head Kids Instructor

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)  is considered a journey and where that journey will take you is of the unknown. It can take you to new countries, bring self-awareness, lead to new relationships and change your world completely. Brazilian native black belt Rose Sousa of GFTeam is no stranger to the adventures that BJJ takes you on. Her BJJ journey has helped her find her courage, her husband, lead to a new career and has brought her to a whole new country. She literally would not be where she is today without that first step she took on the mats back in 1997.

When she was 15 years old, she was very small and skinny. She was what bully’s would consider an easy target.  After getting into two fights at school, she asked her mom to enroll her in a martial arts school. It was the guidance of a friend from school that led her to her first class and opened up a whole new life for Rose. She says it was “love at first train”.

With that Rose’s journey began at Nova União academy with Professor Wendell Alexander. Upon moving to Búzios, Rio de Janeiro she started training with her husband and professor Luiz Dentinho Eduardo on the GFTeam. She was a purple belt at the time. Búzios is a small beach town near Rio de Janiero which is at popular tourist destination. Rose was one of the few females training at her academy. She says that at the time BJJ was mostly popular among men and very few girls were interested. She believed that other women found it too violent.
